Sleep apnea can make you feel tired all the time. You may also find it tough to focus on tasks during the day. These obvious effects are bad enough. But the disorder can also have serious – though largely unseen – impacts on your health. It can raise your blood pressure, for example. That’s why it’s so important to treat sleep apnea.

You may be less than enthused about getting a CPAP machine. Though it is a common treatment for sleep apnea, it isn’t for everyone. Many people prefer the ease and convenience of a custom-made mouthguard.

To see if you’re a good candidate for a sleep mouthguard, schedule a consultation today. Call Jia Y. Lee, DDS at 909-281-1127. In the meantime, see some of the reasons you may want to consider an oral appliance instead of a CPAP:

  • Sleep in Comfort – With a CPAP, you’ll wear a mask that is attached to a machine with tubing. This can make it tough to get comfortable and get to sleep. A sleep appliance simply slips into your mouth, much like a sports mouthguard.
  • Don’t Get Distracted – The mask and tubing, along with the sound the CPAP makes, can also be a distraction for your bed partner. In contrast, they may not even notice your mouthguard.
  • Travel With Ease – A mouthguard can easily be packed away with your other supplies. A CPAP isn’t as simple to get through the TSA line. You can even stow your mouthguard in a pocket or purse, so you can use it anywhere you go. Get a good night’s rest, even on an airplane or in a tent.
  • Skip the Special Supplies – A CPAP needs water – with manufacturers recommending distilled water. You’ll also have to have a power source (batteries or electricity). You don’t need anything extra with a mouthguard. You just pop it into your mouth.
  • Simplify Your Cleaning Routine – You must disassemble your CPAP before cleaning the mask and tubing. Manufacturers recommend soaking them in a vinegar-and-water solution once a week. To avoid mold, they suggest emptying the machine’s water chamber daily, cleaning it, and refilling.  If it has a filter, that needs to be cleaned too. Cleaning a sleep mouthguard is as easy as gently brushing with a mild soap solution.
