Considering Invisalign? If you’re thinking about getting clear aligners to straighten your teeth, it’s important to understand what to expect. Starting your Invisalign treatment is starting you on the path toward a healthier and more functional smile. Today, we’ll share an overview of what to expect with Invisalign, so you can decide if it’s the right option.
- Scheduling a Consultation
The first step is an initial consultation to see if you’re a good candidate. We will take photos, X-rays, and impressions of your teeth to plan your treatment. If you’re a good candidate, we’ll have your aligners made based on the exact movements needed to straighten your teeth. In three to four weeks, you’ll return in about a month to receive your first set of aligners.
- Wearing the Aligners
You’ll wear your aligners for about two weeks before moving on to the next set. You must wear them for at least 20 to 22 hours daily. The only time you should remove them is to brush your teeth, floss, eat, or drink anything other than water. At first, the aligners may feel a bit snug, but this pressure lets you know they’re working! As your teeth shift because of the aligners, you’ll feel a slight pressure. Your aligners are practically invisible, so no one will notice you are pursuing orthodontic treatment.
- Caring for Aligners
You need to remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything but water. You should also brush and floss before putting them back on to ensure your oral health remains strong. Use the Invisalign cleaning solution to soak your aligners in every night. If you play sports, ask us about wearing a mouthguard to avoid breaking the aligners.
- Tracking Progress
You’ll visit us for progress check-ups every four to six weeks. This ensures things are moving along properly through each stage. On average, Invisalign treatment takes about 12 to 18 months. However, your dentist will review how long you can expect to wear your aligners. Most importantly, be diligent about wearing your aligners for the prescribed time to stay on track. Invisalign is comfortable and convenient compared to braces, but does require commitment and responsibility.
- Living with Invisalign
It takes some adjustment to get used to wearing aligners. You may notice that speaking when you are wearing them feels different. You also need to get used to removing them when it’s time to eat. Brushing and flossing become even more important because you don’t want food stuck in your aligners when you are wearing them.
- Complete Your Treatment
If worn consistently, Invisalign is just as effective as braces at straightening smiles. Not only does Invisalign improve the alignment of your teeth, but it can also correct bites and spacing or crowding issues. When you are done with your aligner treatment, you’ll have the beautiful, straight teeth you’ve always wanted. Just be patient during the process and trust our treatment plan for your smile.
Are you wondering if it is a good fit for you, or do you have more questions about starting your Invisalign treatment?
